About the Lecture

How Does a Plane Fly? Join us for a lecture by someone who does it for a living:

Most of us have spent a flight staring out of the window with a vague memory of something about air moving faster over the top of the wing. Capt. Soham has spent eleven years on the other side of the flight deck door, and he's here to do the explanation properly — the real physics of how an aircraft flies, in terms that don't require a degree to follow.

From there we go into the part passengers never see: what is actually happening in the flight deck during approach and landing, the busiest and most choreographed minutes of any flight. And then the questions he gets asked every time someone visits the cockpit — the trivia, the myths, the things people are nervous about — with plenty of room for yours.

Stay back afterwards if you'd like to try your hand at a flight simulator.

The session explores:

The physics of flight, explained by someone who uses it rather than teaches it
What actually happens in the flight deck during approach and landing
The questions pilots get asked most, and the honest answers
An open Q&A, and a flight simulator to try after the session
